Bienvenue

Arrival on French soils.
Leaving the safety of the car deck into the wi
de unknown of Calais docks the light was blinding.

Weather: dreary, low cloud, humid
.

There were several ferries in the port when we arrived, Hector was amazed at how big they were. He had seen big aeroplanes in Canada, and buses in Oxford but never a floating city. Having survived the journey without feeling sea-sick we all set about the long drive to Deauville.

Along the way we saw many new sites- the wind farm at the side of the road was highly impressive. Its hard to believe the sails are being turned by the wind, they move so smoothly and slowly that it looks more like a motor is doing the work.
We drove along the A16 south, first encountering a "Deviation", then got onto the A28 and A29.

The most spectacular sites as were drove through the rolling hills and fields of the nothern provinces were undoubtedly the valleys and the bridges that spanned them. The views drew gasps of awe, the architecture equally dynamic. A sweeping pass cut through a hillside might open out into a leafy void where the road seemingly glided over the canapy, dancing on the leaves in the gentle breeze.

At the "peage" Hector became worried that we were approaching border control and so tried to slide down into the glovebox from his position on the front. At passport control in England he had leapfrogged over my shoulder into the rear footwell in an attempt to avoid detection as his papers are still at the Moosean Embassy in Grovesnor Square. In the eyes of the Feds Hector is still a fugitive at large and has been doing well to keep a low profile these last two years.

The most impressive sight of the whole journey is the 'Pont De Normandie'. The bridge is in two sections with another peage in the middle. The first resembles a scalextrix circuit, curving and at a very slight angle. The second is a suspension bridge, very angular and striking on the landscape. Not long afterwards is the 50cents peage to let us into Deauville et St Gatien. We drove in through the forest and got to our hotel at about 1400.

My personal favourite photo so far. Hector has been captured here in the most splendid luminscent light:
