Dreary afternoon's golf

After lunch we ventured to the course again, rolling rain clouds in the air but clear enough for a round certainly. By about the third hole the rain started, nothing too heavy but certainly enough to dampen the spirit- play was slow but with nothing ahead of us we made good time Dad played 4 shots better than I did on the first nine, though we both had some fantasic shots. Hector was staying out of the rain the best he could, pulling his hoodie well up and sitting in the golf bag.

Soon enough the weather cleared and Dad's game certainly improved with it. Hector was very impressed with this attempt at the par 3 fifth hole, pitching the ball only six feet from the pin and achieving a par- excellent for us.

Just down the road from the course is Deauville & St. Gatien Aeroport. Frequently while playing we hear the rumble of engines and see light aircraft taking off and landing- there is the occasional private jet also. During the height of the racing scene and just before the sales there are some private charter flights in also to bring in the rich and famous, other than that it's a quiet airport.

These last few days while we've been playing there have often been a couple of sea gulls that accompany us around the course, staying twenty yards or so ahead of us but always tracking our balls around the course- we joke about them being our guides or there to protect us, but without fail there are always two or three gulls wandering through the holes with us. Here is one- I've called him Bernard.

By the end of the first round the weather was improving and Dad lead us home with this fantastic drive down the par five last, leaving the ball in the middle of the fairway right next to the marker. Hector made a point of applauding his effort and then later mocking me for my dismal effort that left me in th emiddle of the driving range-aka lost ball.
